There's no such thing as a jitter-free digital interface — every clock has some amount of noise, and every transmission path adds a little more. What changes is where that noise gets introduced, and whether the receiving DAC has to guess at the clock or is simply handed one. S/PDIF and TOSLINK mix clock and data together, so your DAC has to run a PLL to pull a clock back out of that stream — a well-known source of jitter — regardless of how good the transport upstream is. I²S skips that step entirely, using different lines for clock and data. Nice and clean.

Edgewater Audiolab focuses on the parts of a CD transport that most commercial products treat as an afterthought: clocking, ultra-low-noise power isolation, and the control interface between mechanism and DAC. We're not chasing a house sound or a signature voicing — we're building the cleanest possible bridge between reference-grade disc mechanisms and whatever DAC you already own. Our platform combines industrial servo engines via native UART control and un-multiplexed I²S audio output, paired with configurable I²S-over-HDMI pinouts so it can talk to the DAC you have, not just the one we'd prefer you buy.

Our kit is as a modular platform: the board-set and mechanism work as a complete transport on their own, ready for a custom-built enclosure and power supply of your choice. Your gear should reflect your personal aesthetic, blending seamlessly into your system and the room it lives in. Every I²S line, master-clock trace, and control header is exposed and configurable — we don't assume you want our defaults. It's built for people who want to understand exactly what's happening between the disc and the DAC, not just trust that it does.
